BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SETS PROPERTY TAX RATE AT LOWEST LEVEL SINCE 2000-2001
The Holmes County Board of County Commissioners has set the initial proposed tax rate for the upcoming year at 9.1960. The County’s property tax rate, which is also known as the millage rate, is in addition to other taxing authorities such as the school district, the municipalities and other entities authorized by law to establish millages against a property’s taxable value in order to be funded by property taxes.
The Board of County Commissioners indicates that the historically low millage rate was accomplished as a result of a number of factors. Those factors include the County being more efficient with its limited resources, the avoidance of accumulating debt and the recent increase in residential construction and commercial enterprise in the County.
“We have been very conservative” said interim County Coordinator Joey Marsh. “At the same time we have heard the public say that they like parks, libraries, maintained roads and they certainly support public safety. In light of focusing on the needs of our citizens, we are also proud to be able to lower the millage rate and hopefully take a little financial stress off of some folks. I am proud of what the Board, our department heads and the Constitutional Officers were able to accomplish this year.”
The first public hearing on the proposed budget will occur at 5:01 p.m. on September 12, 2016, at the County Commission chambers.
